I am guessing around the world it would just be another quirky British thing that we do. But yesterday Chris Huhne was made Steward and Bailiff of the Three Hundreds of Chiltern.
Why?
Because he is not allowed to resign from being an MP of the UK parliament, so the way they get around this is by giving the MP a profit job from the monarchy which then expels them from the job as MP.
A former Chiltern Steward includes former Prime Minister Tony Blair. Due to the fact he needed to get out of being an MP to become an envoy and simply can't resign.
